"Tokyo Takeover" is a exclusive bonus track on the Japanese edition of Rina Sawayama's debut studio album, Sawayama. The song was written by Sawayama and Justin Tailor, with Tailor producing it.
Initially intended for Sawayama's scrapped debut EP Alone Together, "Tokyo Takeover" is about her birth place, and how she has struggled to embrace her Japanese roots while growing up in London.
This song and "Love It If We Made It" were taken down region-wide on all digital services in 2024.
Background
The song was originally meant to be on Sawayama's cancelled debut EP Alone Together, and was written around 2015 with its producer Hoost.[1]
According to Sawayama, the song was written at a time when she was "feeling less confident about my Japanese identity and being in the UK," she explained, "I was generally not as sure of myself then as I hadn't met all of my amazing friends at this point who taught me to embrace both cultures, all aspects of them." She also expressed that "the way the English and the Japanese play off each other shows that struggle in my head."[2]
Lyrics
Hey 原宿, how you hurting?
By Omotesando
Fuck 'em if they don't know what you're made of
Hey Shimokita, señorita
Fuck 'em if they don't know what you're made of
I guess I'm just happy (1-2-3-4)
(Wherever you go)
