"Free Woman" is a song by American singer and songwriter Lady Gaga, from her 2020 sixth studio album Chromatica. Lyrically, the song sees the singer answering the question "what does it mean to be a free woman?", and challenging the need to be with a man in order to survive. She declares that she can feel free on her own and "victoriously move[s] forward", saying "I'm still something if I don't got a man / I'm a free woman."
Rina Sawayama and Clarence Clarity are featured on a remix of the song, for Gaga's remix album titled Dawn of Chromatica.
Background
Lady Gaga's highly anticipated sixth studio album, Chromatica, was released on 29 May 2020, to positive reviews. On 4 April 2021, the album's producer BloodPop wrote on Twitter about the possibility of a Chromatica remix album and asked followers to suggest which artists they would like to see on it. Later, he replied himself tagging Rina Sawayama, who answered it with a smirking emoji.
Rina Sawayama Teases She's Recorded Free Woman with Lady Gaga
During an interview at the 2021 Brit Awards, Sawayama talked about the project, stating "the wish is on the internet, and I've done my bit, let's just say that. So, it's in the works".[1] Sawayama didn't reveal the song she would be featured on, but she was asked if it was the actually fan-favorite track "Free Woman" that she recorded. "I don't know! There are a lot of f's in the song!" she said.[1]
On 9 August 2021, a fan asked BloodPop on Twitter which remix features Sawayama, and he replied "Fr** w*****".[2] The following day, Sawayama took to her Twitter and shared lyrics from the song, "I’M A FREE WOMAN".[3]
The remix album Dawn of Chromatica and the Rina Sawayama and Clarence Clarity remix of "Free Woman" were announced on 30 August 2021, with a release date set for 3 September 2021.[4] That same day, Sawayama shared a teaser of the remix through her social media.[5]
Live performances
The remix of "Free Woman" was used as the closing song for Sawayama's The Dynasty Tour (2021–22), performed after "Lucid".[6] During the show in Glasgow, Scotland, Sawayama dedicated the performance of "Free Woman" to Britney Spears following the termination of her 13 years conservatorship.[7]
